Senior Ministry

A Senior Ministry is a pastoral and community-based ministry that serves the spiritual, emotional, social, and physical well-being of senior citizens. It recognizes that older adults are not only recipients of care but also valuable members of the Church who continue to enrich the faith community through their wisdom, experience, prayer, and witness.

The primary aim of Senior Ministry is to enhance the quality of life of older adults by promoting dignity, companionship, active participation, lifelong learning, and mutual support. It seeks to create an environment where seniors feel respected, valued, loved, and included.

Fr. Joseph Mathew Adopillil started the Senior ministry in 2024. Every third Wednesday members gather together along with Holy Qurbana at 9.am. The Tampa Senior ministry works in collaboration with regional Senior ministry and has formed a Forane Executive Committee.

Christian Perspective

From a Christian perspective, old age is a blessing and a gift from God. Sacred Scripture honors the elderly as people of wisdom and faith:

“Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.” (Proverbs 16:31)

The Church teaches that every stage of life has a unique vocation. Senior adults continue to share in Christ’s mission through prayer, service, encouragement, and the transmission of faith to younger generations. Their lives remind the community of God’s faithfulness through every season of life.

Jesus showed special love and compassion toward the elderly, the sick, and the vulnerable. The Christian community is therefore called to honor, accompany, and care for its senior members with love and respect.

Goals of Senior Ministry

  • To deepen the spiritual life of senior members through prayer, the Holy Eucharist, Scripture reflection, and the Sacraments.
  • To foster fellowship and reduce loneliness by building meaningful relationships within the parish community.
  • To encourage active participation in the life and mission of the Church according to each person’s gifts and abilities.
  • To provide opportunities for faith formation, lifelong learning, and personal growth.
  • To promote emotional, mental, and physical well-being through educational, cultural, and recreational activities.
  • To support seniors and their families during times of illness, grief, or other life challenges.
  • To encourage seniors to become witnesses of faith by sharing their life experiences and Christian values with younger generations.
  • To build an intergenerational parish where the young and the elderly learn from and support one another.
